It allows direct execution of DOS and MS-Windows applications on Unix Workstations. SoftWindows starts SoftWindows from the X Window System, Version 11 Release 4 or 5. SoftWindows can also use character-mode terminals for DOS use only. sssswwwwiiiinnnn2222 and ddddoooossss6666 are synonyms for SSSSooooffffttttWWWWiiiinnnnddddoooowwwwssss2222 wwwwiiiinnnn3333 is a shorthand for SSSSooooffffttttWWWWiiiinnnnddddoooowwwwssss2222 ----cccc """"wwwwiiiinnnn"""" ddddoooossss6666nnnneeeetttt is a shorthand for SSSSooooffffttttWWWWiiiinnnnddddoooowwwwssss2222 ----cccc """"cccc::::\\\\nnnnoooovvvveeeellllllll\\\\eeeetttthhhheeeerrrr"""" wwwwiiiinnnn3333nnnneeeetttt is a shorthand for SSSSooooffffttttWWWWiiiinnnnddddoooowwwwssss2222 ----cccc """"cccc::::\\\\nnnnoooovvvveeeellllllll\\\\eeeetttthhhheeeerrrr;;;; wwwwiiiinnnn"""" SoftWindows first checks the user's home directory for a ....sssswwwwiiiinnnn2222ccccoooonnnnffffiiiigggg file. If this file doesn't exist then SoftWindows will use the file ssssyyyyssss....sssswwwwiiiinnnn2222ccccoooonnnnffffiiiigggg in the SoftWindows installation directory to create a .swin2config in the user's home directory. Typically user configuration is performed via the SoftWindows menu interface. To avoid conflicts, a user's .swin2config file should not be edited directly while running SoftWindows. OOOOPPPPTTTTIIIIOOOONNNNSSSS The SoftWindows program accepts all of the standard X Toolkit command line options. The following options are commonly used with SoftWindows. See XXXX((((1111)))) for a complete list and description. ----ddddiiiissssppppllllaaaayyyy _d_i_s_p_l_a_y This option specifies the X server to use. ----ggggeeeeoooommmmeeeettttrrrryyyy _g_e_o_m_e_t_r_y This option specifies the location of the SoftWindows window. Only the X and Y offsets are relevant; width and height are ignored. So for example: SoftWindows2 -c win causes DOS to execute the command 'win' as soon as it boots. Semicolons should be used to seperate mutiple DOS commands; this will require the whole string in quotes: SoftWindows2 -c "c:\novell\ether; win" is how wwwwiiiinnnn3333nnnneeeetttt starts up the Novell session and runs Windows. ----tttteeeerrrrmmmm tttteeeerrrrmmmm----ttttyyyyppppeeee This option sets up SoftWindows in Dumb Terminal mode (see below). The parameter term-type should be one of the names in the term directory in the SoftWindows installation directory, unless -keymap is also used, when a Unix Terminal name can be used instead. ----kkkkeeeeyyyymmmmaaaapppp tttteeeerrrrmmmm----ttttyyyyppppeeee This option is used in SoftWindows' Dumb Terminal mode (see below). It allows the keyboard style to be set independently from the terminal type defined with -term. The parameter term-type should be one of the names in the term directory in the SoftWindows installation directory. RRRREEEESSSSOOOOUUUURRRRCCCCEEEESSSS The _S_o_f_t_W_i_n_d_o_w_s program understands all of the core X Toolkit resource names and classes. See _X(_1) for more information. The appearance of the SoftWindows main window is governed by the PC video adapter emulation. The following resources affect the appearance of the SoftWindows menus and status line only. bbbbaaaacccckkkkggggrrrroooouuuunnnndddd ((((class BBBBaaaacccckkkkggggrrrroooouuuunnnndddd)))) Specifies the background color of the menus and status line. bbbboooorrrrddddeeeerrrrCCCCoooolllloooorrrr ((((class BBBBoooorrrrddddeeeerrrrCCCCoooolllloooorrrr)))) Specifies the border color used for the menus and Page 2 (printed 10/17/95) SSSSooooffffttttWWWWiiiinnnnddddoooowwwwssss((((1111)))) IIIInnnnssssiiiiggggnnnniiiiaaaa SSSSooooffffttttWWWWiiiinnnnddddoooowwwwssss((((1111)))) status line. ffffoooonnnntttt ((((class FFFFoooonnnntttt)))) Specifies the font for displaying text in the menus and status line. ffffoooorrrreeeeggggrrrroooouuuunnnndddd ((((class FFFFoooorrrreeeeggggrrrroooouuuunnnndddd)))) Specifies the color for displaying text in the menus and status line. ttttiiiittttlllleeee ((((class TTTTiiiittttlllleeee)))) Specifies the window title for SoftWindows. This string may be used by the window manager when displaying this application. Certain resources can be defined in the X11 resource database for use by the window manager. These define whether window menu and accelerator keys are used by the window manager and thus if they are available to SoftWindows. PPPPOOOOIIIINNNNTTTTEEEERRRR UUUUSSSSAAAAGGGGEEEE The left mouse button is used to navigate SoftWindows menus and select commands. To activate a menu or select a command, move the pointer over the desired menu item and click the left button. The Attach Mouse command can be used to attach the mouse to SoftWindows, enabling DOS mouse drivers to be used. To detach the mouse from SoftWindows, simultaneously press Ctrl + Alt and click the middle mouse button (both buttons on a two-button mouse). (N.B. The Alt button on an HP-ITF keyboard is the EEEExxxxtttteeeennnndddd CCCChhhhaaaarrrr key). When the mouse pointer is attached in this way, it must be detached in order to access any other X11 window. FFFFOOOONNNNTTTTSSSS _S_o_f_t_W_i_n_d_o_w_s will check to see if the fonts required by the video adapter emulation are installed and available to the X server being used whenever it is run, and if these cannot be found it attempts to provide the X server with an appropriate set of fonts from the ffffoooonnnnttttssss directory in the SoftWindows installation directory. The list of servers currently supported in this way is: Page 3 (printed 10/17/95) SSSSooooffffttttWWWWiiiinnnnddddoooowwwwssss((((1111)))) IIIInnnnssssiiiiggggnnnniiiiaaaa SSSSooooffffttttWWWWiiiinnnnddddoooowwwwssss((((1111)))) _____________________________________________________________ _|X_1_1__S_e_r_v_e_r__T_y_p_e_________________________________|_F_o_n_t__S_o_u_r_c_e__| | | | |Sun X11/News on SunOS 4 and SunOS 5.1 and 5.2 | fonts/NeWS | |Sun X11 on SunOS 5.3 | fonts/SPARC | |Hewlett-Packard X11R5 Servers on HPUX-9.0.1 | fonts/HP | |Silicon Graphics X11 Servers | fonts/SGI | |IBM AIX 3.2.5 X11R5 Servers | fonts/IBM | |DEC DECWINDOWS X11 Servers | fonts/DEC | | | | _|_______________________________________________|_____________| _S_o_f_t_W_i_n_d_o_w_s uses the ServerVendor string (see _x_d_p_y_i_n_f_o(_1_X) ) to determine the server to use. If it does not recognise the server the default font directory (HP) is used instead. This should work for many X11R5 servers, but if not, an error message will be displayed when the font is accessed. The font sources (in _f_o_n_t_s/_s_r_c in the SoftWindows installation directory) should then be compiled into a directory such as _f_o_n_t_s/_M_I_T in the SoftWindows installation directory, using the server's font compiler (e.g. bbbbddddffffttttoooossssnnnnffff (1)). xxxxsssseeeetttt ffffpppp++++ [[[[ddddiiiirrrrnnnnaaaammmmeeee]]]] should then be used used to tell the X11 server about these fonts before _S_o_f_t_W_i_n_d_o_w_s is started on future occasions. Another reason font setup may not work is that the SoftWindows font files must be installed visible to the X11 server on which SoftWindows is to be displayed. Otherwise an error will occur when SoftWindows attempts to set up the font directory, as the X11 server cannot 'see' the directory which SoftWindows tells it. The only solution to this problem is to use xxxxsssseeeetttt ffffpppp to tell the X server about the correct directory, or to copy the font files to a directory already used by the X server. MIT style X servers will typically look in /_u_s_r/_l_i_b/_X_1_1/_f_o_n_t_s/_m_i_s_c . DDDDUUUUMMMMBBBB TTTTEEEERRRRMMMMIIIINNNNAAAALLLL SSSSUUUUPPPPPPPPOOOORRRRTTTT SoftWindows supports the use of dumb terminals, or compatible X-Windows terminal emulators, in what is called Dumb Terminal mode. This is invoked by running SoftWindows with the argument -term _x, where x is the name of the terminal being used. The terminal type must be one of the supported terminals, files for which are stored in the term directory in the SoftWindows installation directory. In certain cases, the terminal name used here is not the same as that used by the host OS. When this happens, SoftWindows must be invoked with an additional paramter -keymap: SoftWindows2 -term host-term -keymap softwindows-term Page 4 (printed 10/17/95) SSSSooooffffttttWWWWiiiinnnnddddoooowwwwssss((((1111)))) IIIInnnnssssiiiiggggnnnniiiiaaaa SSSSooooffffttttWWWWiiiinnnnddddoooowwwwssss((((1111)))) where host-term is the host OS's terminal name, and softwindows-term is the name used by SoftWindows. If these do not define the same actual terminal the result is undefined. In addition to the standard key combinations the dumb terminal definitions define a number of special sequences. these allow the user to, for example, exit SoftWindows. Alternatively, the DOS program eeeexxxxiiiittttsssswwwwiiiinnnn will cause an immediate exit from SoftWindows in either X11 or Dumb Terminal mode. DDDDUUUUMMMMBBBB TTTTEEEERRRRMMMMIIIINNNNAAAALLLL RRRREEEESSSSTTTTRRRRIIIICCCCTTTTIIIIOOOONNNNSSSS _S_o_f_t_W_i_n_d_o_w_s does not support the use of DOS mode graphics, running MS-Windows or any Windows applications in Dumb Terminal mode. Line graphics characters for DOS text video modes are supported wherever possible, but some terminals lack the necessary character shapes; in these cases other characters are used instead. The following terminal types are supported: HP2392, HP2393, HP2394, HP2397, HP700/44, HP700/92 and HP700/94, VT100 and VT200 and compatible (includes the X11-based xterm), Wyse model 60 and compatible, IBM 3151 and ANSI compatible (includes IRIX X11-based iris-ansi terminal). EEEENNNNVVVVIIIIRRRROOOONNNNMMMMEEEENNNNTTTT The following environment variables must be set in order that SoftWindows runs correctly. HHHHOOOOMMMMEEEE The user's home directory. Required for access to configuration files at startup. This environment variable is set by the shell and should not be changed by the user. LLLLMMMM____LLLLIIIICCCCEEEENNNNSSSSEEEE____FFFFIIIILLLLEEEE The license file. You should only set this environment variable if you do not have a license for SoftWindows installed on your own machine, but you have a license installed with a license server running on another host on your network. In this case, the environment variable should be set to _p_o_r_t@_h_o_s_t, where ppppoooorrrrtttt is the TCP/IP port number used by the license server, usually 744, and hhhhoooosssstttt is the name of the host on which the license server is running.
